Psychology: Funded PhD Scholarship at Swansea University: Developing psycho-social patient centred intervention to remediate behaviourally complex needs

This scholarship is funded by Fieldbay Ltd. and Swansea University. Subject Areas: Neuropsychology / Clinical Psychology The proposed PhD project involves collaboration between practicing clinicians, university academics and an innovative private health care organisation to understand best practice for the service of patients with complex needs. The research project will involve a mixed-methods (qualitative and quantitative) approach that will focus on evaluating and guiding best practice in four major domains: (a) ‘Smart-technological’ environmental modification as a means of remediating challenging behaviours (e.g., bio-feedback monitors that train users to reduce stress responses);(b) delivery of psycho-social (e.g., mindfulness, positive psychology, positive behaviour support) intervention packages to raise psychological resilience in client groups/staff groups working in challenging environments;(c) delivery of occupational therapy focused interventions (e.g., cognitive stimulation therapy that raise experience elements essential for well-being (empowerment);(d) delivery of training programs to staff interacting with service-users to improve current practice by increasing positive affect rather than simply focusing on reducing the behaviour (e.g., in dealing with challenging anger issues one could ask ‘how do we reduce anger episodes?’ or one could ask ‘how do we help the patient better manage anger as well as feel happier as this state is incongruent with anger’). In all cases, the research agenda will comprise both evaluation of current practice and through engagement with relevant research literature inform and shape future practice. In short, the project will explore all aspects of the care ‘package’ delivered by Fieldbay both to evidence-base current well established best-practice and further improve future practice. As such it is a unique innovative research agenda that draws on the practical experience and
